builder victoria strawbale

Chris Rule has always been interested in all things hands-on, with a love of creativity and construction. Chris began building and renovating homes over 25 years ago working and experimenting with conventional building techniques and also mud brick and straw bale. All of Chris' designs and renovations prioritise  simple harmony with the environment and being a pleasant and nurturing place to live.

He is not not only a contemporary designer and builder but a painter, illustrator and mechanical engineer in the classic bush sense. He has worked in the creative field for the past 35 years with a broad career in advertising, screen-printing, copy writing and as a cartoonist and writer for The Weekly Times where he also wrote the long-running Doing Up the Block handy-hints column for decades.

After making his own monster straw bale house in the late 90's he thought it could be a good thing becoming a builder of all things straw bale. He became a registered builder (Domestic Builder Unlimited 31807) and is also a government-accredited Home Sustainability Assessor.

With Chris's extensive experience, flare for style and understanding of the importance of efficient, affordable and friendly homes it is his intention to help make the straw bale house a common feature across the sun soaked and frosty southern areas of Australia as part of a general movement toward a rationally and sustainably-housed population.
